How to play Pentago

Pentago combines placing marbles with rotating sections of the board. You play blue against gold. A turn normally has two parts: choose an empty square for your marble, then turn any numbered 3×3 quadrant by a quarter turn.

  1. You are blue and start; the computer is gold. Place a marble on an empty square.
  2. Then rotate any numbered 3×3 quadrant 90° left or right using its buttons. It need not contain your new marble.
  3. Five or more in a straight line wins. A line completed by placement wins immediately, before rotation. If rotation gives both sides a line, or the board fills without a line, it is a draw.

Tips for your next round

  • Before placing, imagine the board after your planned rotation. Stones in a different quadrant may move into the line you need.
  • Check the computer’s lines after the twist too. A rotation can create a winning line for either side.
