How to play Battleship

Battleship is a hidden-fleet game of searching and following up hits. Your fleet is visible below the target grid, and the computer’s ships remain hidden until discovered. Both sides fire one shot per turn, whether the previous shot hit or missed.

  1. Both 10×10 fleets are automatically placed from the game seed: ships of lengths 5, 4, 3, 3 and 2. Ships may touch but never overlap.
  2. You shoot first. Choose an untried coordinate on the target grid. Each turn is one shot, hit or miss; sunk ships are announced.
  3. Your own fleet is shown below. The computer chooses using only its past hits and misses. Sink all five enemy ships before yours are sunk. Undo is disabled because it would reveal hidden information.

Tips for your next round

  • After a hit, try nearby squares in the same row or column to discover the ship’s direction.
  • When a ship is sunk, return to searching the remaining open areas. Ships may touch here, so nearby squares are not automatically safe.
