How to play Checkers

This Checkers game follows the English draughts movement rules. You control the blue pieces at the bottom and move first. Ordinary men travel forward diagonally; kings can also travel backward. The highlighted destinations show which moves are currently legal.

  1. You are blue at the bottom and move first; the computer is gold. Select a piece, then a highlighted destination.
  2. Men move one diagonal step forward or jump over an adjacent opponent into the empty square beyond. Kings, marked K, can also move and jump backward. Jumps are compulsory: choose any available capture and finish its whole chain.
  3. A man reaching the far row becomes a king and ends its turn, even during a jump chain. A player with no legal move loses.
  4. This digital version automatically draws at three repetitions of the same position and turn, or after 80 consecutive turns without a capture or an uncrowned man moving.

Tips for your next round

  • Captures are compulsory. Before advancing a piece, check the whole jump sequence you might be forced to make next.
  • Keep neighboring pieces able to support each other. An isolated piece is easier to capture and may be unable to reach the king row safely.

A capture jumps over an adjacent piece into the empty square beyond it. Promotion ends the turn. This version draws after three repeated positions or 80 turns without a capture or a man moving.
