How to play Domineering

Domineering is a placement game in which the two players use the same board differently. Your blue dominoes stand vertically, while the gold computer’s dominoes lie horizontally. Every placement permanently occupies two neighboring empty squares.

  1. You play blue vertical dominoes first; the computer plays gold horizontal dominoes.
  2. Choose the top square of two vertically adjacent empty squares. The computer needs two horizontally adjacent empty squares.
  3. Dominoes cannot overlap or move. If you cannot place a domino on your turn, you lose.

Tips for your next round

  • A narrow vertical space may remain available to you after it becomes unusable for the horizontal player.
  • Compare the moves your placement removes from both sides. Taking space is helpful when it restricts the opponent more than you.

Choose the top square of a free vertical pair. You move first, and a player who cannot place a domino on their turn loses.
