How to play Breakthrough
Breakthrough is a racing strategy game with an army of forward-moving pieces. You control blue from the bottom of the board. A single piece reaching the far home row wins, so a small opening in a defensive line can decide the game.
- You are blue at the bottom and move first; the computer is gold. Select a piece, then its destination.
- Move one square forward, straight or diagonally, into an empty space. Capture only diagonally forward; captures are optional. No piece moves backward.
- Reach the opposite home row with any piece, or leave the opponent with no legal move, to win.
Tips for your next round
- Support an advancing piece with another piece behind it. A lone runner is easier to capture before it reaches the far row.
- Look for threats on both sides of the board. Attacking one side can draw defenders away from a second route.
Move straight or diagonally forward into an empty square; capture only diagonally forward. Captures are optional, and no piece moves backward.
