How to play Chomp

Chomp is a chocolate-bar strategy game with one square you must leave alone. Selecting a square removes it and every remaining square below it and to its right. You and the computer alternate bites until someone is forced to take the poison.

  1. You and the computer take turns, starting with you.
  2. Choose a square of chocolate: it and every remaining square below and to its right disappear.
  3. The top-left square marked × is poisoned. Whoever takes it loses. This board is a rotated version of the traditional chocolate-bar layout.

Tips for your next round

  • Study the shape left after a bite, not just the amount you remove. A large bite may leave the opponent an easy reply.
  • Near the end, count the choices that remain along the top row and left column before selecting a square.

The poisoned square is the top-left corner marked ×. Whoever takes it loses. This orientation is rotated from some traditional Chomp diagrams.
