How to play Nim

Nim is a turn-based counting game. On every turn you choose one pile and remove any positive number of counters from it. The starting piles contain 3, 5 and 7 counters, and you take the first turn.

  1. Normal-play Nim starts with piles of 3, 5 and 7 counters. You move first against the computer.
  2. On each turn remove one or more counters from exactly one pile. The number buttons show how many to take.
  3. Taking the final counter wins.

Tips for your next round

  • In this version, taking the final counter wins. Do not use the opposite last-counter rule found in some other Nim games.
  • When only two piles remain, leaving them equal is a useful position: after a change to one, you can match the other.

This is normal-play Nim against a local computer. You cannot remove counters from more than one pile in a single turn.
