How to play Gomoku

Gomoku is a stone-placement game often described as five-in-a-row. You play blue, placing a stone on any empty square before the gold computer responds. Lines can run horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

  1. This is a compact 9×9 freestyle variant. You are blue and start; the computer is gold.
  2. Place one stone on any empty space. Five or more consecutive stones in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line win.
  3. There are no forbidden moves or opening swaps. A full board without a winning line draws.

Tips for your next round

  • A line open at both ends is harder to block than one pressed against the edge. Look for room to extend your stones.
  • Check the opponent’s immediate threats before starting a longer attack. Four stones with an available end need a prompt response.
