How to play Shikaku

Shikaku is a rectangle puzzle rather than a number-entry game. Every cell must belong to one rectangle, each rectangle must contain exactly one clue, and the clue gives its area. Squares count as rectangles too.

  1. Select two opposite corners to create a rectangle, including single-cell rectangles.
  2. Each rectangle must contain exactly one number and its area must equal that number.
  3. Cover the entire grid without overlap. Tap a filled rectangle to remove it.

Tips for your next round

  • Use factor pairs to find possible shapes. A clue of 4 might occupy a 1×4 strip or a 2×2 square if the surrounding cells allow it.
  • Check edge and corner cells that have few possible owners. They can force a nearby rectangle into one position.

Select opposite corners to draw a rectangle, or tap an existing rectangle to remove it. Three original 4×4 base puzzles appear in different orientations.
